Okay well i have to start at the very begining, last year has been very harsh for me. I found out i had a heart murmor, then i found out i had a hole in my heart and that resulted in having to have heart surgery. I brusied serverly around the cut marks and couldnt walk too good for about a month. Then a few months later i got bit by a brown recluse and had to be put on two different types of anti biotics, i was bitten by a bunch of fire ants and then i caught h1n1 and was in bed for about 10 days. So a few weeks ago i got to thinking, lifes to short and theirs so many close calls in life for me to go around wanting to do stuff but not have the courage to do them. Ive wanted a belly ring for so long but always been afraid too actually have it done so after a year of bad luck and close calls i decided that it was time for me to do something crazy and unexpected. So i talked to my mama about it and the next day she rode with me to the local piercer and i had it done, i picked out a double jewele banana ring to be put in that was the same color as my birthstone. When it was all done with, as i walked out the door i told myself “Heres a year of bad luck and (quite literally) heartache”

By Heather from Hope, MI

.

My name is Mango (AKA Heather). This is my story: Ever since I was 13 years old, I’ve always wanted a tounge piercing. I thought they were the coolest thing ever. I never dared ask permission from dad for one, though, as I knew he’d NEVER let me get one. Well, now I’m 2 months away from turning 20, and I’ve decided I can get done what I want when I want, without dad’s permission. Wednesday afternoon, (May 5th) I discovered my boyfriend had been cheating on me, so I told him to bugger off. Since we’d argued a month before about my desire to get a tounge piercing, I decided the night of May 5th that the following morning I was gonna go to a tattoo parlor and get it done! As luck would have it, my dear friend Cam said he’d pick me and my friend, Cauldren, up from her house Thursday mid-day and take us out to The Electric Chair in Bay City. On the way to the parlor, I panicked, chickened out of the tongue piercing, and decided I’d ask about a very cool industrial ring I’d seen two weeks before whn I accompanied my friend there for her naval piercing. When we got to the parlor, one of the tattoo artists smiled at us and asked what he could do for us. I started questioning him about the different piercings there. He said the industrials were $45 cos they were two holes, but I was wondering about the spiral one I was eyeing, as it had 5 holes, but the artist said there’s a great chance for pulling, as all 5 would have to line up perfectly. So I questioned about my tattoo (it needs to be touched up) and about a small heart on my stomach. He said he’d do both at once for $60, but I only had $50 with me. I asked how much naval piercings were -I couldn’t remember from two weeks prior- when he said $25, I told him “sign me up before I change my mind!” So I filled out the paperwork, and waited while the piercer, Painter, got out the tools he needed and washed his hands. When he was ready, he called me back. Both my friends followed me back into the room. I knew where to go, what to do. Before he did ! anything , Painter picked up each tool and explained they had all been through the Autoclave as soon as they came in. Each was in it’s own individual bag, sterile, and sealed. He opened them, then told me to stand up straight. He made two small marks with ink on my skin with a tooth pink. He then pointed me to lay down. Cauldren panicked and looked the other way (she’s terrified of needles), but held my hand, and Cam watched the whole process. Painter was very gentle, and used tongs to clamp the skin for the piercing. He told me to take a deep breath, exhale slowly, I felt a slight pinch, and then Painter said “There’s your piercing.” Then he got the naval ring, put it through the hole, and tightened it on. Removed the clamp and said “all done! Check it out in the mirror.” It looked perfect The studio itself is very clean, yet seems vintage as it’s an old building out on E Michigan Ave. but before we even left the piercing room, Painter was already cleaning things off and throwing away the needle he’d used to piere my naval with. He handed me an after care sheet with instructions and suggestions and even a list of “what to expect during the healing process” I can’t say how long it will take to heal, as this was two days ago, but I hardly bled. It didn’t hurt to get done like I thought it would, but then again I’ve got a high pain tolerance level. It’s slightly bruised as I bumped it yesterday, but I’m very happy with it and the studio gets two thumbs up from me! I’m going back in a week to get my tattoos.

My sister got her belly button pierced when she was 18 and I wanted mine done too. I was 15 and my mother said no.

I was so jelous as I watched my sister take care of her piercing. She would take half an hour in the morning and half an hour at night to clean it. It was so beautiful and it seemed to give her more confidence. After about a month her belly button started turning red and it got infected real bad. She had to get it taken out at the hospital. What a bad way to find out you are alergic to metal.

Well that was many years ago.I have been buying belly button rings for years just waiting to get up the nerve. They sit in their packages waiting for the day I can open them and use them. I am 27 now and I got a piercing on friday. I have had no problems with metal piercings in my ears I hope this works. My husband took me to a local piercing place. I had been there before to see how they clean their equipment. Each needle is packaged in sterile packaging and onlyh used once then thrown awa.. The guy answered all of my questions. I picked out a bar that had green stones because green is my favorite color. He made me feel relaxed about a needle piercing my flesh. He used an alcohol pad that numbed the area.

I clean it every morning and every night. I use a shot glass with sea salt and warm water to clean it and pull out any infection in the mornings and I shower with antibacterial soap at night. I see no problems and I am excited about how it looks.

I may have waited a long time for this but I think it was worth the wait.

I got my belly button pierced when i was12 years old. It was a very painful proxess resulting in me fainting.

I kept the original piercing bar in for about a month or so. That was when the stones fell out after my first swimming experience.

So, i went to a tattoo parlour and got a new bar put in. I knew it wasn’t healed. So i didn’t do it myself. I didn’t do it myself until my piercing was about 6 months old. But even then i was paranoid about steralising, clean hands, anti bact soap and everything.

I’m now 14 and have the same belly piercing. Im still fair paranoied about it because i have made it this far without infection and i love it a heap. Even today i call it the best $90 ever spent.

Lots of people these days are getting piercings some normal and some unique i am one of thoes people tht does them themselves rather than paying to get them done.

I wanted to try to pierce my belly so i got out a curved sowing needle and sterilized it then i got the belly ring i purchased earlier and sterilized tht too then i got a permanent marker and figured out where the hole would begin and end up then i got out some ice and nummed the sopt for awile then pushed the needle all the way through and left it in for abt a couple of hrs.

Then i took the needle out and pushed the belly ring in and after that i sterilized it and put tape on the piercing so it wouldnt rip off in my sleep and did it every night for about 4 weeks untill it healed then in abt 7 weeks i changed it to a dangly ring making shure to sterilize every ring tht i used into my belly it can be a painful piercing and if u have thick skin lyk me it will be a difficult piercing to do u have to beable to take pain when doing this pircing or it will hurt u and only use surgical stainless steal stanless steal or the new PFFTE piercings or it will get infected!

So for like two years now i’ve been asking my mom can i get a belly ring. And everytime she said no.

So the summer of 09 i really started geting interested in one. So i looked up alot of information like cost, healing time, ect. I put all that into a email and sent it to my parents. They still said no.

So i let two weeks pass. And thats when i started to get mad. I have alot of dolls in my room. So i truned all their head around and placed signs in my room saying “Happiness ans Smiles are no long in this room”

I also sent a bunch of videos of people geting their belly button pierced to my mom. And under each video i put “i will not give up until you say yes” So 2 days later my mom said yes and took me to get pierced. Now its all pretty

By Katie, from Doncaster, England.

I wanted my belly pierced since I can remember. I remember seeing all the stick thin girls when I was on holiday with their navel’s pierced, but I wasn’t allowed mine done because I was really young at the time. I had my ears done when I was 6 years old and I thought they hurt, so I was a bit apprehensive to have my belly done.
From when I started in secondary school (year 7), I tried to persuade my mum to let me have my belly pierced. Course, she didn’t let me, so I had to put the idea to the back of my head. Then, my sister wanted her hair dyed, which I wanted to do but wasn’t allowed, so I told my mum that if she had her hair dyed, I would have my belly pierced.

Anyway, she had her hair dyed, so my mum gave into me and allowed me to have my belly pierced, but said that I’d have to wait till the end of February when I’m 16 to get it done. I managed to bring that date forward to Christmas, and then thought about the healing process coinsiding with my leavers day, so I managed to bring it frward again to the 24th October. Near the big day, mum attempted to change my mind about it by saying things like ‘what will happen if you get an infection’, and ‘are you sure you want this done because when you have it done there’s no going back’, but this obviously didn’t work! I researched belly piercing and found out facts about the healing process, what material to have it pierced with and how to take care of it. Also, I found some videos on the actual piercing of the navel and familiarised myself with the process, so I wouldn’t freak out when I felt the clamp or the needle.
So, I’d managed to persuade my mum, but I decided not to tell my dad until afterwards and then he wouldn’t be able to do anything about it. All I had to do now was find a piercing studio. I’d heard a lot of good things about Body Arts in town from my friends, who’d had no problems with their piercing whatsoever, so I decided to go there. I rang them up and asked for the opening and closing times and the cost and what materi!
al they pierced with.

I went on the Saturday with my mum. The woman who pierced it was very friendly and sprayed some numbing solution on my belly. I chose my belly bar; it was gold titanium with pink gems. There were loads of belly bars in the cabinet so it took quite a while to choose. She came back, took the bar out of the cabinet, sprayed my belly again and took me through to the piercing room. She took out a pen and marked a dot in the middle just above the button. Then, she got a ruler and measured 1cm from the edge of my navel and told me to check it in the mirror. She told me that the gauge was 1.6mm and the length was 12mm (they pierce it with a longer length to make cleaning easier and so it can heal better). Once I gave the marking the OK, I laid on the bed and she got the clamps and needle out of the autoclave, and clamped my belly. I did the wrong thing of look up to see what was happening, but I soon laid back down again. She kept speaking to me and didn’t tell me when she was putting the needle throgh. It was painful, but no where near as much as having my earlobes done. (earlobes were 6/10 whereas belly was about a 2).

Mum was looking out the window all the time I was having it done. It burned and stung for about 5 seconds whilst she hooked the bar onto the end of the needle and pulled it through, but after she’d screwed the top ball on and I stood up and looked at the gem in my navel, all the pain disappeared.

The lady gave me a slip of paper with aftercare instructions on it, and gave me some savlon spray. She told me to apply it 4 times a day and showed me how to clean it. Moreover, she told me I could change it in 2 months, just in time for Christmas.
Within the first week, I did the WRONG thing by bending over to put my shoes on- very painful. I later realised that my piercing had snagged from the top hole a little bit and there was a patch of blood around it. Altogether, it snagged 3 times, but only tiny little ones(it takes a lot to rip a belly bar out) either by me trying to rip it!
out in
my sleep or whilst doing exercise. I then realised after 2 weeks that 4 times with the Savlon was too much as it was very irritated, so I changed to bathing it with warm water and normal soap, only using savlon straight after changing the bar.

I have had my piercing now for 3 months and there has been no more problems.
I have 12 belly bars including the one I had it pierced with now, so I have plenty of choice to choose from. I bought them from a mixture of Body Art , Argos, Claires, Hsamuel and River Island (my first one was from Hsamuel as the quality is the best)

I love my belly piercing! By the way, on the photo, my navel isn’t shaped like that, its a shadow on the left hand side from the light.

I have always wanted to get my belly pierced since I was 11. I was so fasinated with it and I even though it was sophisticated and i still do.

Well, I am 16 now and i recently got my belly pierced in the begining of the year(January 2, 2010). It took a lot to convince my brother to take me(Hes my legal guardian). After trying to persuade him for the 1,000th time, He tells me “Give me one good reason I should take you to get it done when I wont allow you to walk around with a short shirt”. I say ” Exactly, Im not going to walk around school or the mall with a short shirt so why cant i get it done when its for me to see when i take a shower or go swiming”. Case closed ! (LOL)

The place I went to get it pierced at was in Hunington Beach in California called Tommy T’s Body Piercing. It was very sanitary and made me think of a hospital. I was so nervous! . My piercer went through everything with me and as nervous as i was it did not even hurt. I played it safe and simple and got a plain ring. Takng care of it was very easy i just cleaned it and didnt mess with it! This was a fun experience. I love my belly button ring and cant wait to put a pretty ring in their !

I cant wait to go swiming so i can show off my belly. This was a great decison for me but make sure when you get yours done, you do it because you want it, not because “its the thing”. Thanks for reading my story. I hope you enjoyed it and make a great decision. P.S – Proper aftercare is essential. Use the things your piercer tells you to use such as saline solution and sea soaks.

Thanks and be safe !
